Jaishankar’s first visit to Spain set for January 13-14.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to embark on a two-day visit to Spain on January 13-14, aimed at reviewing the trajectory of bilateral relations between India and Spain.

This visit comes nearly two and a half months after Spanish President Pedro Sanchez’s visit to India in late October 2024. The visit is significant, as it marks Jaishankar’s first trip to Spain in his capacity as External Affairs Minister.

During his stay, Jaishankar will engage with the Spanish leadership, including a meeting with Spain's Foreign Minister, Manuel Albares. Their discussions will focus on a wide range of topics, including bilateral relations, regional and global issues of mutual interest, and areas where both nations can strengthen cooperation.

In addition to his official meetings, Jaishankar is scheduled to address the 9th Annual Conference of Spanish Ambassadors. He will also meet with the Indian community in Spain, further strengthening ties with the diaspora.

This visit follows the October meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish President Sanchez, where they jointly inaugurated a production facility for the C-295 military transport aircraft.

The discussions between Modi and Sanchez highlighted the deepening collaboration between the two nations in defence and security, as well as in other areas such as trade, technology, and connectivity.

One of the significant outcomes of that visit was the decision to enhance cooperation under the EU-India Connectivity Partnership, with a focus on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) project, aimed at boosting connectivity across regions.

During Jaishankar's visit, he and Foreign Minister Albares are expected to review the progress of the agreements made during the Modi-Sanchez meeting. This includes the continued development of bilateral initiatives and ensuring the realisation of shared objectives between India and Spain.
