EAM Jaishankar Hosts Brazilian FM For Strategic Talks In Delhi.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar warmly welcomed Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira to India on Tuesday, expressing optimism for fruitful discussions during the upcoming 9th India-Brazil Joint Commission Meeting. The meeting marks a significant milestone in the growing strategic partnership between the two nations.

In a post on X, Jaishankar stated, “Pleased to welcome FM Mauro Vieira of Brazil today. Look forward to productive discussions of the 9th India – Brazil Joint Commission Meeting.” Brazilian Minister Vieira arrived in New Delhi on Saturday for a four-day official visit, which will continue until August 28.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that Vieira’s visit is expected to further strengthen the strategic ties between India and Brazil. The two countries will discuss ways to advance key outcomes from India’s G20 Presidency last year, as part of the collaborative efforts of the G20 Troika, which includes India, Brazil, and South Africa.

Brazil has taken over the G20 presidency and will hold the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19, continuing its leadership until November 2024. The G20, comprising 19 countries including India and Brazil, serves as a crucial platform for international economic cooperation.

India and Brazil share a deep and multifaceted relationship grounded in common values and mutual interests. The MEA emphasised that Vieira’s visit provides an excellent opportunity to enhance this partnership, which was initially established in 2006. Both nations aim to explore new areas of collaboration across bilateral, regional, and multilateral arenas, spanning various sectors.

During his visit, Jaishankar and Vieira will engage in discussions on how India and Brazil can collaborate more effectively within the G20 framework. This includes leveraging their roles in the Troika to drive forward initiatives that emerged from India’s previous G20 Presidency, particularly those related to sustainable development and economic growth.

Earlier in July, Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the MEA, led India’s delegation at the G20 Development Ministers’ Meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

At the meeting, Ravi showcased India’s flagship programs such as the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Jal Jeevan Mission, and AMRUT, reaffirming India’s dedication to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to water and sanitation.

The collaboration between India and Brazil extends beyond the G20 framework. Both countries are keen to enhance cooperation in areas like technology, innovation, agriculture, and renewable energy. The visit of Brazilian FM Vieira is expected to open new avenues for joint ventures and partnerships that can benefit both nations economically and socially.

The strategic partnership between India and Brazil is also focused on addressing global challenges such as climate change, public health, and sustainable development.

By working together, the two countries aim to contribute to global stability and prosperity, reinforcing their roles as emerging leaders on the international stage.

As the 9th India-Brazil Joint Commission Meeting approaches, the anticipation is high for both sides to outline clear strategies and actionable plans that will drive the partnership forward. Jaishankar’s welcoming remarks set a positive tone for the discussions, signalling a mutual commitment to deepening ties and exploring innovative solutions to common challenges.
