Poll panel seeks evidence from Kejriwal on Yamuna Poison remark.

The Election Commission has reached out to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, seeking evidence to support his recent claims that the Haryana government has been intentionally contaminating Yamuna water.

The Commission has asked Kejriwal to substantiate his allegations, stating that his response must be submitted by 8 pm on Wednesday.

This inquiry follows Kejriwal's strong accusations made on January 27, where he alleged that the Haryana government, under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was deliberately mixing poison into the Yamuna's waters.

He claimed that this act was aimed at disrupting Delhi's water supply as part of what he called "dirty politics." Kejriwal further stated that the contaminated water was so toxic that it rendered Delhi's water treatment plants unable to purify it, posing a severe threat to the residents of the capital.

In his statement, he described the alleged actions as a deliberate attempt to harm Delhi's population, equating it to mass murder.

The Election Commission had earlier directed the Haryana government to submit a factual report on the matter by January 28. This directive was aimed at addressing concerns about rising ammonia levels in the Yamuna water, which is a key source of water supply for Delhi.

The allegations have sparked significant political tensions, with Kejriwal accusing the BJP of playing politics with essential resources like water. He emphasised that depriving people of clean water was a grave injustice and an unpardonable act.

These remarks have added to the ongoing disputes between the Delhi government, led by AAP, and the BJP-governed Haryana.

The issue of Yamuna water contamination has been a recurring point of contention between the two states. Delhi depends on water supplied from Haryana to meet the needs of its population, and any disruptions or quality issues can lead to widespread concerns.

The increased levels of ammonia in the Yamuna water have been cited as a major challenge, affecting the operations of water treatment plants and raising alarms over public health and safety.

The Haryana government, on its part, has denied any wrongdoing and has yet to provide a detailed response to the allegations. The BJP has criticised Kejriwal's remarks, accusing him of making baseless claims to politicise the issue during the election season.
