The Election Commission on Wednesday officially certified the victory of Election Commission as India’s 15th Vice President, setting the stage for his oath of office, expected to be administered by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Radhakrishnan, 67, secured the vice presidential seat on Tuesday, defeating joint opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes. The election was necessitated following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21 due to health concerns.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Vivek Joshi and S S S Sandhu, signed the certification of Radhakrishnan’s election. “Thereafter, a signed copy of the same was handed over to the Union Home Secretary by Bhanu Prakash Yeturu, Deputy Election Commissioner, and Suman Kumar Das, Secretary, which will be read out at the time of the oath-taking ceremony of the new Vice President,” the EC said.
A senior official described the forthcoming ceremony as a formal event at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where the new Vice President will take his constitutional oath before assuming office.

Radhakrishnan, a veteran politician from the ruling party, has previously served in various capacities, including as a Rajya Sabha MP and party office-bearer. His election consolidates the party’s position in the Upper House while ensuring continuity of leadership following Dhankhar’s resignation.
The opposition had fielded Sudershan Reddy, a former bureaucrat, but could not muster sufficient support, reflecting the ruling coalition’s numerical advantage among the electoral college.
Analysts noted that the margin of victory also signals the ruling alliance’s strategic consolidation in the parliamentary framework.
The Vice President of India serves as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the Upper House, as well as maintaining parliamentary decorum during legislative proceedings.
