The Election Commission of India (ECI) officials presented the Gazette containing the names of the elected members of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly to Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Sunday at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai.
This marked a significant procedural step following the conclusion of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections.
Deputy Election Commissioner Hirdesh Kumar and Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra, S Chockalingam, submitted the Gazette to the Governor.
This document includes the names of all the elected representatives and the Election Commission of India's notification, in compliance with Section 73 of the Representation of People Act, 1951.
The results of the General Elections were officially declared on November 23, followed by the publication of the elected candidates' names in the Maharashtra Government State Gazette on November 24.
Several senior officials were present during this meeting, emphasising the importance of the event. Additional Chief Electoral Officer Kiran Kulkarni, Joint Chief Electoral Officer Manohar Parkar, Secretary to the ECI Suman Kumar Das, and Section Officer Niranjan Kumar Sharma also participated in this formal handover.
The recently concluded elections saw the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance secure a dominant position in Maharashtra's political landscape. Out of the total 288 constituencies, Mahayuti claimed a decisive 230 seats.
Within the alliance, the BJP emerged as the largest party, winning 132 seats. Its allies, the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the NCP faction led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, secured 57 and 41 seats respectively.
On the other hand, the opposition bloc Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) faced a significant setback. The Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, led by Uddhav Thackeray, managed to win just 20 seats. Congress added 16 seats to the alliance, while Sharad Pawar's NCP faction secured a mere 10.
This outcome signals a major shift in Maharashtra's political equation, with Mahayuti solidifying its hold over the state.
The handover of the Gazette marks the official completion of the election process, paving the way for the newly elected representatives to assume their roles in the Legislative Assembly.
This development also sets the stage for the formation of the new government in Maharashtra under the leadership of the victorious alliance.
