In compliance with a Supreme Court order to disclose previously sealed electoral bond data, the Election Commission of India unveiled comprehensive insights into the financial transactions of major political parties.
The data released covers the period leading up to 12th April 2019, with additional details provided for transactions thereafter, as made public by the poll panel in the previous week.
Following the Supreme Court's interim order from 12th April 2019, political parties had submitted electoral bond data in sealed cover, as confirmed by an official statement from the Election Commission.
The securely lodged data, left unopened, was returned to the Election Commission by the Supreme Court Registry, in accordance with a recent Supreme Court ruling dated 15th March 2024. The Election Commission promptly published this digitised data on electoral bonds on its official website.
The revealed data sheds light on significant financial transactions, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as the top recipient, encashing electoral bonds totalling ₹6,986.5 crore. Notably, the BJP received the highest sum of ₹2,555 crore during the fiscal year 2019-20.
Following the BJP, the Indian National Congress redeemed a total of ₹1,334.35 crore through electoral bonds.
Other major political parties also recorded substantial transactions:
- Trinamool Congress received ₹1,397 crore via electoral bonds, making it the second-largest recipient after the BJP.
- Biju Janata Dal (BJD) encashed electoral bonds worth ₹944.5 crore.
- Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSR Congress) received ₹442.8 crore through electoral bonds.
- Telugu Desam Party (TDP) secured ₹181.35 crore via electoral bonds.
Additionally, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BRS) emerged as the fourth-largest recipient, encashing bonds worth ₹1,322 crore.
Further breakdown of electoral bond transactions for other parties:
- Samajwadi Party (SP) received ₹14.05 crore.
- Shiromani Akali Dal (Akali Dal) obtained ₹7.26 crore.
- All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) received ₹6.05 crore.
- National Conference garnered ₹50 lakhs.
