The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled elections for 12 vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha on September 3. This decision marks a significant step in filling the seats that have recently become available across various states.
The ECI has set August 21 as the last date for issuing notifications about the elections. Following this, the scrutiny of nominations will take place on August 22. Candidates must withdraw their nominations by August 26 if they are contesting in Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, or Tripura. For those running in Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan, Telangana, or Odisha, the withdrawal deadline is August 27.
On the day of the election, September 3, polling will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the counting of votes scheduled for 5 p.m. The vacant seats are distributed across several states: two each in Assam and Maharashtra, one each in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tripura, Telangana, and Odisha, and two in Bihar.
In related news, Mamata Mohanta, who represents the Kudumi tribals of Mayurbhanj, has resigned from both the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and her Rajya Sabha seat. Mohanta submitted her resignation on July 31, 2024. In her resignation letter to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, she stated, "I do hereby tender my resignation from the membership of Rajya Sabha, today, i.e. July 31, 2024. I have taken this decision consciously."
After her resignation from the BJD, Mohanta joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She explained her decision, saying, "My only aim is the service and welfare of the public. It can be fulfilled only by joining the BJP."
In her letter to Naveen Patnaik, Mohanta expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the national cause. She also mentioned that she felt her services were no longer needed within the BJD, leading her to make this difficult decision in the interest of the public.
