Eco-friendly Ganesh idols made from cow dung are gaining popularity as a sustainable alternative for festival celebrations. This innovative approach is not only promoting greener practices but also raising awareness about the need for environmentally conscious choices in traditional festivities.

The shift from harmful materials like Plaster of Paris (POP) to biodegradable options is a positive step towards reducing pollution during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

Cow dung, typically used in rural areas for fuel, fertiliser, and construction, is now being repurposed into sacred idols of Lord Ganesha. This initiative, led by artisans like Srinivasa Prasad, is helping to create a more eco-friendly approach to festivals. Prasad, the founder of the project, explained that their primary goal is to support their Gaushala by making and selling these idols.

“We have been crafting Ganesh idols for the past decade and sending them to various states like Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat,” he said. The process also provides employment opportunities for women, contributing to their empowerment.

Prasad detailed the steps involved in crafting these idols, noting that cow dung is first dried and powdered before being mixed with a natural binding material called lasoda. The mixture is then placed into a mould, and after drying for around 15 to 20 days, it is decorated with colours.

“The dung takes time to dry, especially in the summer months, and we ensure that the idols are strong and durable. They can reach up to two feet in height, with prices ranging from Rs. 100 to Rs. 1500,” he added.

What sets these cow dung idols apart from the traditional clay ones is their added environmental benefit. Cow dung is rich in carbon, which enriches the soil when the idols dissolve in water after the festival.

Unlike POP idols that leave behind harmful residues, cow dung idols break down naturally, nourishing the plants. This eco-friendly solution has been well received by customers. Jyothi, a customer who visited the shop, shared her enthusiasm.

“We came here looking for cow dung for our home and were amazed to see the range of products they make. We bought some idols today and are impressed with their work,” she said.
