Incarcerated MP and chief of the Awami Ittehad party, Engineer Rashid, narrowly survived an attack on his life inside Tihar Jail, his party claimed on Friday after his advocate shared the details of the incident.
Advocate Hubbi said Rashid disclosed that “Tihar Jail authorities have devised new methods to harass Kashmiri prisoners by deliberately lodging male eunuchs with them inside barracks , who are encouraged to provoke, attack and create a hostile environment.”
He said Rashid had a narrow escape when a group of Eunuch inmates pushed and threw a gate on him. “It was a miraculous escape. Had it hit directly, it could have been fatal. This is nothing short of a deliberate attempt to physically harm him,” Hubbi said.
Rashid further alleged that Kashmiri inmates, including Ayoub Pathan of Beerwah, Bilal Mir of Qamarwari, and Amir Gojri of Srinagar, were first attacked by these male eunuchs, while Arshid Tanch of Kupwara was also subjected to humiliation.
Rashid said the harassment had now crossed all limits. During prayers, these inmates deliberately cause disturbances and attempt to provoke Kashmiri prisoners, he added.
Hubbi further alleged that the eunuch inmates who have been declared HIV positive were intentionally lodged with Kashmiri detainees. He also cautioned that notorious gangsters inside Tihar appear to be backing this sinister campaign, systematically targeting Kashmiris for the past three months.
The party has now demanded an independent probe, strict accountability of the jail authorities, and immediate guarantees for the safety and dignity of Rashid and other Kashmiri detainees.
