The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) will stage a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Saturday in response to the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College.

The demonstration seeks to highlight the grave issues facing healthcare professionals and press for the implementation of the Central Healthcare Protection Act, which has been pending for some time.

FAIMA's protest aims to demand justice for the victim and call on the government to expedite the enactment of legislation designed to protect medical staff across the country. The act has long been advocated by the medical community to address the rising violence against healthcare workers.

"We are deeply disturbed by this heinous crime, which has not only traumatised the medical fraternity but also underscored the significant risks that healthcare professionals endure daily," a FAIMA spokesperson said.

Manish Jangra, the founder and chief advisor of FAIMA, confirmed that the protest is scheduled from 3 to 5 pm and that members from the Resident Doctors of India (RDA) in Delhi-NCR hospitals, including Aligarh and Rohtak, will join the rally.

Earlier in August, the medical community had launched an indefinite strike following the discovery of the trainee doctor's body on August 9. The strike, which lasted 11 days, saw a suspension of elective services, wards, and outpatient departments across the country.

The strike was called off after the Supreme Court's intervention on August 22, which led to the resumption of duties by doctors.

The Supreme Court had intervened in the RG Kar case and the broader issue of doctor safety, leading to renewed calls for adherence to its directives.

The key demands of Saturday’s protest include a thorough investigation into the crime, swift justice for the victim, and the urgent enactment of the Central Healthcare Protection Act to safeguard healthcare workers nationwide.
