Farmer Dallewal's fast reaches Day 27, condition critical

Doctors at the Khanauri border protest site warned that Dallewal is at risk of cardiac arrest and multi-organ failure.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi visited Dallewal at the protest site.

Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal's fast entered its 27th day on Sunday, and doctors declared his condition as "critical." He has been on a hunger strike at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana since November 26, demanding a legal guarantee for MSP (Minimum Support Price) on crops.

Doctors attending to him warned that Dallewal, 70, is at risk of cardiac arrest and multi-organ failure. His immunity has weakened due to the prolonged fasting, making him vulnerable to infections. Doctors mentioned that his hands and feet are cold, and his nervous system and vital organs, like the liver and kidneys, are affected.

His reflexes are slow, and his blood pressure is unstable, which raises concerns. Dallewal's condition is described as "hemodynamically unstable," and he requires intensive care.

A doctor from the '5 Rivers Heart Association' explained that Dallewal's low blood pressure is causing dizziness and fainting risks. They also stated that he needs ICU care, as his current condition could lead to a cardiac arrest.

On Saturday, former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi visited Dallewal at the protest site. Channi conveyed the concerns expressed by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding Dallewal’s health. He also urged the Centre to accept the recommendations of the parliamentary committee and pass a law to guarantee MSP for crops.

In support of Dallewal’s hunger strike, the farmers' organisations announced candle marches across the country on December 24 at 5:30 pm. Additionally, symbolic hunger strikes will take place on December 26, marking one month of Dallewal’s fast, at tehsil and district levels from 10 am to 4 pm.

Farmers have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces. A group of 101 farmers attempted to enter Delhi on foot in December but were blocked by security personnel in Haryana.
