Farmers protest : Union Ministers and farmer leaders to hold second round of meetings
Farmers protesting in Patiala, Punjab.
Farmers from the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and the non-political Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) are set to embark on a journey from various parts of Punjab, converging at Fatehgarh Sahib on Monday afternoon.
Thousands of tractors from different regions of Punjab will assemble, with plans to reach midway by Monday afternoon. The farmers intend to sleep overnight in their tractors on roadsides and proceed towards Delhi based on the outcome of ongoing talks.
Sarwan Singh Pandher, the Coordinator of KMM, emphasized the significant level of participation, stating, “Tractors will be in the thousands, and when combined with over 1000 tractors from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, the scale of the movement from Punjab is noteworthy.”
The union government has extended a direct invitation to Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal, the president of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Sidhupur), for the second round of meetings scheduled for Monday at 5 pm in Chandigarh.
The meeting will include key ministers such as Arjun Munda, the union minister of Agriculture, Piyush Goyal, the union minister of Commerce and Industry, and Nityanand Rai, the minister of State of Home Affairs.
Jagjit Singh Dallewal revealed that a total of 26 representatives would attend the meeting, with 13 each from SKM and KMM.
The protesting farmer unions have put forward a series of demands, including the enactment of a law guaranteeing Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops, complete debt waiver for farmers and labourers, reintroduction of the Land Acquisition Act of 2013, justice for the Lakhimpur Kheri massacre victims, withdrawal from the World Trade Organization, pension for farmers and farm labourers, compensation for families of deceased farmers during the Delhi agitation, and the scrapping of the Electricity Amendment Bill 2020, among others.
Sarvan Singh Pandher, the General Secretary of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, highlighted that the farmers' demands had been unheard for 75 years and urged the government to address these long-standing issues. He stated, "We will move peacefully, and our objective is that the government listens to our demands."
