Police chargesheet says the attack on NC chief Farooq Abdullah was a pre-planned assassination attempt driven by long-held resentment over militancy and the Kashmiri Pandit exodus.

Investigators have filed a chargesheet in the recent assassination attempt on National Conference Chairman Dr Farooq Abdullah, stating that it was a pre-planned and premeditated attack aimed at eliminating the biggest and most influential political figure in Jammu and Kashmir.

The chargesheet against the accused Kamal Singh was presented in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Jammu on Friday. Kamal is presently lodged in District Jail, Ambphalla, Jammu.

In its 600-page chargesheet, the police stated that the accused had intentionally developed hate and animosity against Farooq Abdullah as he considered him responsible for the rise of terrorism in Kashmir. They said the accused holds Abdullah responsible for the exodus of the Pandits and other people from the Valley during the 1990s. The chargesheet further says that the accused was planning to take revenge for the incidents in the past, which he had been planning for nearly 20 years.

"His action was not sudden but a premeditated one. Given his resentment or enmity he had harboured in his mind against Dr Abdullah — allegedly holding him responsible for militancy-related issues, including those of Kashmiri migrants and their properties — he had come to the venue with the specific intention to target the former Chief Minister. Investigation pointed out that the firing by the accused was not accidental but a deliberate attempt to kill Dr Farooq Abdullah,” the chargesheet mentioned.

The evidence and weapons seized and analysed clearly show that the move was pre-planned, deliberate, and premeditated.

On March 11, 2026, a video of the scene emerged from the wedding where the accused is seen pointing a revolver at Farooq Abdullah; before he could shoot, the security personnel pushed away Singh while the bullet flew in the air.

A case FIR No. 29/2026 under Section 109 BNS and Sections 3/25/30 of the Arms Act was registered at Police Station Gangyal, Jammu.
