Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a social media user following a complaint by the National Commission for Women (NCW) regarding a 'lewd and derogatory' remark made about Smriti Singh, the widow of Kirti Chakra awardee (posthumous) Captain Anshuman Singh.
According to officials, the FIR was filed by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit under provisions of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
The social media user, a resident of Delhi, faces charges under Section 79 of the BNS (intentional insult to modesty of a woman) and Section 67 of the IT Act (publishing obscene material electronically).
The NCW took suo motu cognizance of the matter and lodged a complaint, urging swift action from the Delhi Police.
They also wrote to the Police Commissioner of Delhi, demanding the offender's arrest and a detailed report within three days.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the NCW condemned the incident, stating, "The man's comment violates Section 79 of the BNS, 2023, and Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000. NCW strongly denounces such behavior and calls for immediate legal action."
Investigations into the case are currently ongoing to ascertain further details.
Captain Anshuman Singh, a doctor serving with the Indian Army, tragically lost his life in a fire incident at an ammunition dump in the Siachen Glacier area last year.
Despite the danger, he displayed exceptional bravery by rescuing individuals and attempting to retrieve critical medical supplies from a burning room.
In recognition of his valor, Captain Anshuman Singh was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award.
His widow, Smriti Singh, along with his mother, received the honor from President Draupadi Murumu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on July 5.
