Village defence guards (VDGs) stationed in a village in Jammu and Kashmir opened fire late on Monday night after observing suspicious movement late at night, officials said.
The VDGs took action after noticing two unidentified persons near the house of a political activist in village Meira-Nagrota, eight kilometres from Rajouri district headquarters, officials added.
While there was no exchange of fire or confrontation reported from the suspected area, security forces rushed to the area after the incident, cordoned off the village, and carried out searches following the incident.
However, there was no trace of the suspected persons.
Rajouri district has witnessed a series of terrorist attacks this year in a continuing a pattern of violence.
These incidents form a part of the larger trend of increasing terrorist activity in the area, including the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch.
There have been a number of terror incidents, including attacks on military personnel, civilians and VDGs.
These attacks have raised a series of questions on the security situation in the region with security forces intensifying counter-terrorism operations.
The Ministry of Home Affairs recently announced that weapons issued to VDGs will be upgraded in the districts of Rajouri and Poonch.
“The VDGs will be given fresh training and other support from the central government so that they could tackle security challenges that may confront them at any moment in time,” the MHA statement said.
