Five individuals have been arrested on charges of brutally murdering two women under the Musabani police station area in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, due to superstitious beliefs.
Police stated that the villagers carried out the killings on the suspicion that the victims were practising witchcraft. The five accused have been taken into custody and have reportedly confessed to the crime.
According to reports, the incident took place in Parulia Tola Shrimatdih village under the jurisdiction of Musabani police station. On 26 April, a 10-year-old daughter of a villager named Soma Bodra passed away.
The family of the deceased girl suspected that two women from the village had caused her death through witchcraft. Acting on this belief, on the evening of 14 May, Dibru Hansda, Soma Bodra, Magu Hansda, Chotka Bodra, and Sandil Purti allegedly strangled the two women to death.
They subsequently buried the bodies towards the western side of the village.
Upon receiving information about the incident, the police promptly registered a case on 19 May and launched an investigation. All five suspects were later arrested.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to the murders. The police recovered the buried bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination. The tools used in the killings have also been seized.
Rural SP of East Singhbhum, Rishabh Garg, stated that the incident was the result of superstition and a lack of awareness. All the accused have been remanded to judicial custody and further investigation is underway.
