Five officers from the Jammu and Kashmir police have been awarded the prestigious Shaurya Chakra for their remarkable courage and bravery.
This is the first time in history that five officers from the J&K police have been awarded for their role in counterterrorism operations.
The President of India, Draupadi Murmu, presented these prestigious medals at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday.
The recipients from J&K Police were SGCt Saifullah Qadri (posthumously), DySP Mohan Lal (now SP), SI Amit Raina, SI Feroz Ahmad, and Constable Varun Singh.
Additionally, Parshotam Kumar, a Village Defence Committee (VDC) member from Rajouri, was also honoured with the Shaurya Chakra.
Director General of Police (DGP) Rashmi Ranjan Swain praised the courage of these officers, stating that they brought honour and glory to the J&K Police.
"This recognition shows the exemplary commitment of one of the finest Police forces of the country," he said.
He expressed gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other officials for acknowledging the bravery and sacrifices of the J&K Police and thanked the people of J&K for their continuous support.
The Ministry of Defence announced these awards on Independence Day 2023 and Republic Day 2024.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police manage civilian cases and have been deeply involved in intelligence gathering and counter-terrorism operations in the valley for over three decades.
This force has demonstrated its combat efficiency to the highest standards. One of its specialised units, the Special Operations Group (SOG), is trained similarly to Special Forces to effectively handle counter-terrorism operations.
