Former ITBP DG Gautam Kaul dies at 83

Former Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) director general Gautam Kaul, who was Additional Commissioner of Police in Delhi when Indira Gandhi was assassinated, died on Wednesday following  prolonged illness at the age of 83.

 

Kaul was cremated on Thursday at the Lodhi crematorium here, officials said. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

 

A retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1965 batch, Kaul was the son of late Congress leader and former Union minister Sheila Kaul.

 

Kaul was posted as Additional Commissioner of Delhi Police in 1984 when the then prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated at her official residence in the national Capital.

 

He served as the ITBP DG during 1998-2001.

 

The ITBP, which primarily guards the India-China Line of Actual Control (LAC), condoled the death through a post on X.

 

"DG ITBP and all ranks are deeply saddened by the demise of Sh. Pt. Gautam Kaul, Ex DG #ITBP. A distinguished IPS officer of the 1965 batch, he was a beacon of service, a prolific writer and a music aficionado. Our heartfelt condolences to his family," the force posted.

 

Kiran Bedi, the first woman IPS officer of the country, paid her "respectful homage" to Kaul who was his senior in the service.

 

"I was a Probationer with him in 1974. He was a very good and a kind man. Very welfare oriented. Shall miss my mentor," she posted on X along with a picture of them at the Delhi Police 'At Home' event in 2020.
