Madhu Koda, former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, has approached the Delhi High Court seeking the suspension of his corruption conviction order, allowing him to participate in the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections scheduled for November 2024.

In his petition, Koda, who has previously served as an MP, MLA, and Chief Minister, argues that his candidacy for the elections would be compromised if his conviction is not stayed.

During the recent court proceedings, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) opposed Koda's plea, citing previous rejections of similar petitions by the High Court. The court has scheduled the next hearing for August 13, 2024, after considering arguments from both sides.

Notably, Koda's wife, Geeta Koda, who currently holds the position of MP for Singhbhum constituency in Jharkhand, is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the same constituency on a BJP ticket. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently rallied support for Geeta Koda during a campaign event in Chaibasa.

Koda's legal battle stems from a 2017 corruption case where he was sentenced to three years in prison and fined Rs 5 lakh. However, he was granted bail in 2018, and the fine was suspended.

Despite a failed 2020 application for pardon, Koda aims to re-enter politics with BJP backing.
