The Jodhpur police arrested former Mumbai Indians and Ranji Trophy player Shivalik Sharma from Vadodara in the wee hours of Tuesday on charges of rape.
The left-handed batsman known for his bowling skills as well, Sharma has played in Ranji Trophy for Baroda and represented the Mumbai Indians IPL team last year.
The alleged victim said in a complaint lodged at the Kudi Bhagatsani Housing Board police station in Jodhpur that Sharma, with whom she was engaged, had raped her several times on the pretext of marriage, but later went back on his word.
She claimed that she had met Sharma in 2023 when she was on a visit to Vadodara along with her friends. She said they had got engaged the same year after the consent of their parents.
The police have conducted the woman’s medical examination and recorded her statement in court. Based on her complaint, the cricketer has been remanded in judicial custody.
