A 30-year-old woman from France has accused a 28-year-old man of raping her on Monday night following a party in the city of Udaipur, police said. The suspect, Pushparaj Ojha, also known as Siddharth, is currently absconding.
The assault is reported to have taken place after a gathering at The Greek Farm café, where the woman and her friends had gone for dinner. According to her complaint, the man came to their table while the party, invited her outside for a smoke, and later persuaded her to go for a drive.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Yogesh Goyal stated that instead of returning her to her hotel, the accused took the woman to his rented flat in Sukher, despite her repeated requests. “He sexually assaulted her at the flat and then dropped her back at her hotel at around 6 a.m. on Tuesday,” Goyal said. “An FIR has been registered based on the woman’s complaint.”
The woman, who arrived in India on 17 April, had travelled from Delhi to Udaipur by bus, reaching the city on 22 June.
In her statement, the complainant said her phone battery had run out and she had asked the man to help recharge it. However, she alleged that he overpowered and raped her. Upon returning to her hotel, she informed two of her friends about the assault.
“She became unwell and was taken to a private hospital in the city by her friends,” said Badgaon Police Station House Officer Pooran Singh. “They then approached the police, and an FIR was registered on the basis of the victim’s initial statement.”
The case has been filed under Section 64(1) (rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Badgaon Police Station. The woman is currently receiving treatment, and a detailed statement will be recorded after her discharge, Singh added.
“A police team has been formed to locate and arrest the accused. The French Embassy in Delhi has also been informed of the case,” Singh said.
