Philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates made an appearance in the Odisha capital on Tuesday, embarking on a busy itinerary focusing on agricultural advancements, development initiatives, and empowerment endeavors here in India.
During his visit, Gates engaged in insightful discussions with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, particularly delving into the transformative potential of applying artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture, potentially revolutionizing farming practices across the state.
"Pleasure meeting @Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Mr @BillGates. Had a wonderful discussion on our technology-driven farmer empowerment initiatives, several welfare initiatives like #JagaMission, #MissionShakti, #OdishaSchoolTransformation, #BSKY and healthcare transformation," Patnaik said on X.
Besides enquiring about the well-being of the residents of the slum, Gates also interacted with members of women's self-help groups (SHGs) that work there.
In addition to his meeting with the Chief Minister, Gates participated in various events linked to key initiatives such as the Jaga Mission, aimed at slum development, the Mukta scheme empowering the urban poor through local employment opportunities, and Mission Shakti, which accentuates women's empowerment.
Moreover, Gates' visit to Maa Mangla Basti in Odisha's Bhubaneswar underscores his commitment to overseeing the progress of various social initiatives, in collaboration with his non-profit organization - the Gates Foundation, which is a vital partner in several developmental projects in India.
Gates highlighted his eagerness to engage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and various stakeholders to explore avenues for ensuring India's innovations reach those in need, irrespective of their geographical location.
In his recent blog post titled "ANCIENT COUNTRY, NEW IDEAS," Gates expressed his enthusiasm about India's ongoing contributions to global innovation. He expressed his excitement to witness the latest breakthroughs firsthand during his visit to the country this week.
The collaboration between the Odisha government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, initiated in 2017, has played a pivotal role in fostering innovation in data-driven decision-making across diverse sectors.
