Gautam Adani, the Chairman and founder of the Adani Group, has extended his condolences to the families affected by the Wayanad landslide. In a gesture of solidarity, he announced a financial aid of Rs 5 crore to support relief efforts in Kerala. This announcement comes in the wake of a devastating landslide that claimed the lives of 158 people in the Meppadi area of Wayanad district following continuous heavy rainfall.
Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, Adani expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in Wayanad. He mentioned that his heart goes out to the affected families and affirmed the Adani Group’s commitment to standing with Kerala during this difficult time. He further stated that the group would contribute Rs 5 crore to the Kerala Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund as a mark of their support.
In response to the disaster, the Southern Naval Command has also taken significant steps to aid in the relief efforts. A disaster relief team comprising 68 personnel from INS Zamorin at Ezhimala was dispatched to the landslide-affected areas in Wayanad.
This deployment was made following a request from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA). The team, equipped with medical personnel and essential equipment, reached the site on the same day they were dispatched.
In addition to the initial team, further personnel are on standby, ready to be deployed as necessary. To bolster the rescue operations, an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) in Search and Rescue (SAR) configuration was also deployed from Kochi to Calicut early on Wednesday morning. This helicopter will assist in the ongoing search and rescue efforts.
The regional meteorological department has issued warnings for continued heavy rainfall in several districts, including Wayanad. An Orange Alert has been declared for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
Additionally, a Yellow Alert is in place for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts. However, no rain warnings are currently in effect for Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.
In light of the disaster, the Kerala government is actively compiling a list of those affected by the landslide. Kerala Revenue and Housing Minister K Rajan stated that the number of people impacted by the incident would be available by the evening.
The list will be prepared based on ration cards and mustering records of plantations. The government is committed to continuing the camps and taking comprehensive measures for the rehabilitation of those affected.
The tragedy in Wayanad has prompted swift and coordinated efforts from both the government and private sector. Gautam Adani’s financial contribution and the Southern Naval Command’s timely intervention reflect a united front in addressing the aftermath of the landslide and supporting the victims.
As rescue operations continue and further assistance is deployed, the focus remains on providing relief and rehabilitation to the affected communities in Wayanad.
