Senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot strongly criticized party colleague Mani Shankar Aiyar on Thursday, calling him a "sarfira" (mad person) for his remarks on former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Gehlot condemned Aiyar's statements, calling them baseless and a result of frustration.
Speaking to reporters, Gehlot said that Rajiv Gandhi played a crucial role in enhancing India's global reputation and introducing significant reforms during his tenure.
He expressed shock over Aiyar's remarks and questioned why such statements were being made about a leader who contributed significantly to the country's development.
"His statements about Rajiv Gandhi reflect the height of frustration. There is so much frustration in him. In such a situation, a person does not know what he is saying. Only a 'sarfira' can say such a thing about Rajiv Gandhi," Gehlot remarked.
Aiyar’s comments surfaced in a video shared on social media by BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya. In the clip, Aiyar is heard questioning Rajiv Gandhi's academic performance and leadership abilities.
He claimed that Gandhi had struggled in his studies in England and failed twice, raising doubts about how someone with such a background could become India's prime minister.
Gehlot dismissed Aiyar’s remarks as completely inappropriate and highlighted Rajiv Gandhi’s achievements, including his efforts in modernizing India’s technology sector and passing transformative laws.
The former Rajasthan CM emphasized that Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership was instrumental in shaping the country’s future, and any attempt to question his legacy was unacceptable.
