A girl accused of making abusive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest has issued a public apology, calling the incident her "first and last mistake", even as Delhi Police continue to investigate the case.
In a video circulating on social media, the girl, who claims to be 15 years old, said she was influenced by groups present at the protest site. She expressed regret for her remarks and apologised to the Prime Minister and the nation.
"I was at the protest site, and there were many groups there abusing the Prime Minister. They were also instigating others to say such things. I am deeply ashamed of what I said and apologise to the entire nation. This was my first and last mistake," she said in the video.
The development comes after the Noida Police registered a Zero FIR on a complaint filed by a Ghaziabad resident. The case was later transferred to the Parliament Street Police Station in Delhi, which has jurisdiction over the protest venue.
According to police, the FIR includes charges related to intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace, statements conducing to public mischief and defamation. Officials said they are verifying the girl's age, noting that the FIR mentions 1994 as her year of birth, while she claims to be a minor.
Senior Delhi Police officials said they have examined the apology video and will decide the future course of the investigation after completing age verification and reviewing the available evidence.
The controversy follows the Delhi Police registering a separate FIR over allegedly objectionable and defamatory social media posts targeting the Prime Minister during the Jantar Mantar protests.
On Friday, Prime Minister Modi said he wished to forgive the students who had abused him and his late mother, adding that punishing them or dragging them through prolonged legal proceedings would not change the situation.
