In a proud moment for India, the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita and Bharat Muni’s Natyashastra have been inscribed in UNESCO’s prestigious Memory of the World Register. This global recognition highlights the immense value of these texts, further enhancing their significance on the world stage.

The Memory of the World (MoW) Register serves as a list of documentary heritage deemed to possess world significance and outstanding universal value.

The texts inscribed on this register undergo a thorough recommendation process by the International Advisory Committee, followed by endorsement by UNESCO’s Executive Board. As of May 2023, there were 494 inscriptions on the MoW Register.

India now has 14 inscriptions in this esteemed register, displaying the country’s rich cultural and intellectual heritage.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his pride over this recognition, stating: "A proud moment for every Indian across the world! The inclusion of the Gita and Natyashastra in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register is a global recognition of our timeless wisdom and rich culture. The Gita and Natyashastra have nurtured civilisation, and consciousness for centuries. Their insights continue to inspire the world."

Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also lauded the development, describing the Bhagavad Gita and Natyashastra as "timeless works" that go beyond literary value.

"They are philosophical and aesthetic foundations that have shaped Bharat’s world view and the way we think, feel, live, and express. With this, we now have 14 inscriptions from our country on this international register," Shekhawat remarked, adding that the honour celebrates India’s eternal wisdom and artistic genius.
