Thousands of users were left staring blankly at their screens after a series of irritating glitches hit Elon Musk’s social media site on Wednesday, which was previously known as Twitter but is now called X. According to the Downdetector website, which monitors the performance of the social media site, the first sign of trouble occurred at 2:03 am, after which the complaints surged to over 25,500.
While some managed to browse without a hitch, a significant number of people found themselves unable to refresh their timelines or access core features on both the mobile app and desktop versions. The initial technical gremlins appeared to have been seen off by 3:34 am, but the stability was short-lived. Yet, by 6:00 am, the platform encountered yet another roadblock, as evidenced by the 11,600 reports generated by Downdetector as users tried to access the site, only to find it unresponsive once again.
The second bout of instability was fortunately short-lived. Service appears to be returning to normal within the hour, and by 7:00 am, the volume of outage reports had largely petered out. At the time of writing, the platform appears to be functioning smoothly once more.
As is often the case with these sudden digital hiccups, X has yet to release an official statement explaining what caused the intermittent blackout. While this is an issue that is common to many of the larger tech platforms, where even a small glitch in the back end has an immediate impact on millions of users, the lack of communication on the part of the firm is leading to speculations on whether this is just another glitch or something more complex.
