Delhi Minister Gopal Rai addressed the tragic incident involving the deaths of three students at a coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar. The students lost their lives due to flooding in the basement of the coaching centre, and the incident has drawn widespread concern and criticism. Rai stated that the government has ordered a swift investigation to uncover the reasons behind the incident. He stressed the need for accountability and immediate action against any illegal coaching institutes operating in basements, which are often unsafe and non-compliant with regulations. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been directed to take prompt action against these illegal operations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena also expressed his deep anguish over the incident, calling it both "unfortunate and unacceptable." In a post on social media platform X, Saxena highlighted the tragedy of losing three Civil Services aspirants due to waterlogging in the basement of the coaching centre.
He emphasised that such incidents should not occur in the capital city and called for a comprehensive report on the incident by the Divisional Commissioner by Tuesday.
The Delhi police have arrested two individuals, the owner and the coordinator of the coaching centre, in connection with the incident. The victims, identified as Shreya Yadav from Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nivin Dalwin from Ernakulam in Kerala, were all promising young students preparing for the UPSC exams.
This tragic event follows another recent incident where a UPSC aspirant was electrocuted on a waterlogged street in Delhi, highlighting ongoing issues with infrastructure and safety in the city. The deaths have sparked outrage and calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and accountability from officials.
