The Indian government has approved the transfer of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma to his parent Allahabad High Court following the discovery of a significant sum of cash at his residence.
The transfer comes in the wake of a fire incident at his home last week, during which authorities reportedly uncovered a large amount of money.
Justice Varma has been directed to assume his new position at the Allahabad High Court with immediate effect.
His transfer follows a decision by the Supreme Court Collegium, which had recommended his repatriation to his parent court. In addition, the Delhi High Court registry has withdrawn all judicial work previously assigned to him.
The government’s decision was announced a day after officials stated that the matter was under review and a final decision would be taken soon. The controversy surrounding Justice Varma has triggered strong reactions within the legal fraternity.
The Allahabad Bar Association has opposed his transfer and launched an indefinite strike in protest, arguing that judges facing allegations of corruption should not be allowed to continue in office.
The bar association issued a statement criticising the decision, asserting that the judiciary must remain free of any misconduct or corruption-related allegations.
The protest has disrupted court proceedings in Allahabad, with lawyers demanding stricter scrutiny of the case and further action against the judge.
The case has raised concerns about judicial accountability and transparency.
While the Supreme Court Collegium has not officially commented on the reasons behind Justice Varma’s transfer, legal experts believe that the move aims to maintain the integrity of the judiciary.
