Following the collapse of the Gambhira bridge near Vadodara, the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) has started a comprehensive inspection of all bridges within its limits in Ahmedabad as a precautionary measure.
This action comes in response to the tragic episode on July 9th, when a part of the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge connecting Vadodara and collapsed into the Mahisagar river, leaving at least 20 dead and several injured.
In Ahmedabad, AUDA officials are now inspecting four major bridges along the Sardar Patel Ring Road, which encircles the city. On Monday, a detailed examination of the Kamod Bridge near Kamod village was carried out using a Mobile Bridge Inspection Unit, a specialised crane system brought in from Delhi that enables engineers to inspect hard-to-reach areas beneath the structure.
“There are two major bridges on the Sardar Patel Ring Road — one near the dam and another near Kamod village. We are currently inspecting the Kamod Bridge using an MBIU to ensure its safety,” said AUDA Executive Engineer Sanjay Patel.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had ordered a high-level inquiry into the Gambhira bridge mishap, assigning a team of tech experts to carry out a detailed investigation. The team has been tasked with reviewing inspection records, repair work and quality checks carried out on the collapsed bridge.
In addition to the probe, the state government has announced financial aid for the victims’ families and those injured in the accident. According to an official statement, cheques amounting to a total of Rs 62 lakh were handed over on Monday. The compensation includes Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Local MP Jasubhai Rathva and MLA Chaitanyasinh Zala oversaw the distribution of the cheques.
Officials said the aid was approved immediately, considering the scale of the traged,y and disbursed without delay. The assistance so far covers four injured victims and the families of 15 people who lost their lives.
