In a tragic incident on Friday evening, eight people drowned while bathing in the Meshwo River in Gujarat's Gandhinagar district. The victims were all from Vasna Sogthi village. Rescue teams recovered the bodies, while one person was found safe.
The group had gone to the river to immerse Ganesh idols, but an unexpected tragedy struck. Sub Divisional Magistrate BB Modiya, who led the search and rescue operation, explained that the villagers had alerted authorities after discovering the drowning. Police and fire brigade personnel arrived quickly to assist.
Modiya noted that the river’s depth may have been misjudged by the victims, especially since the water level had increased recently due to an under-construction check dam nearby. The rescue effort continued into the evening and was concluded once all the bodies were recovered.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident. In a tweet, he said, “Deeply saddened by the news of the loss of life in the drowning incident in Dehgam taluk of Gujarat. My condolences to all the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragedy. May God grant peace to the departed souls.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also conveyed his condolences, expressing deep sadness over the loss and extending sympathy to the affected families.
