Gujarat Operation Targets Illegal Structures Near Somnath Temple.

In a significant operation, the Gujarat administration recently demolished several illegal religious structures near the historic Somnath Temple. This action took place on September 28, 2024, and involved the use of heavy machinery and a substantial police presence to ensure order during the demolition.

The operation was prompted by reports of illegal encroachments and the unauthorised construction of various religious structures in Prabhas Patan, located in the Gir Somnath district.

Notably, the demolition included a mosque, a 500-year-old graveyard, and several dargahs. To execute this extensive operation, the authorities deployed 36 JCBs, 70 tractors, five Hitachi machines, ten dumpers, and around 1,400 policemen, according to reports from local media outlets.

As the demolition began at around 4 a.m., members of the local minority community gathered to witness the event. While the operation was carried out peacefully, over 70 individuals were detained due to protests and movements in restricted areas.

The site saw the presence of several high-ranking officials, including the district collector, Inspector General of Police, and multiple Superintendents of Police, ensuring that the process was closely monitored.

Videos shared by various media outlets depicted the bulldozers and machinery as they began to raze the structures in Prabhas Patan Veraval. The operation underscores ongoing efforts to remove illegal constructions that have proliferated on government land, particularly in coastal regions like Somnath. Historically, this area has faced issues with unauthorised developments, often linked to past conflicts and the presence of significant religious sites.

The history of Somnath Temple itself is marked by various invasions, notably by Mahmud of Ghazni, who looted the temple and shattered its deity’s idol, an event that left a lasting impact on the region's religious and cultural landscape.

These historical traumas have shaped the community’s perception of encroachments and illegal constructions around sacred sites. The temple and its surroundings have long been a focal point for not only religious devotion but also trade and settlement, attracting diverse populations over the centuries.

The Gujarat administration has previously undertaken similar demolition drives in various coastal locations, including Bet Dwarka, Porbandar, and Jamnagar. These efforts aim to address not only the issue of illegal encroachments but also to tackle broader concerns like land grabbing and activities that threaten national security. The government maintains that these operations are essential for restoring order and protecting the sanctity of religious sites.

The recent demolitions have reignited discussions about the balance between preserving religious freedoms and addressing illegal constructions. While some community members view the actions as necessary for reclaiming public land, others see it as an infringement on their rights.

The government emphasises the importance of adhering to laws regarding land use and construction, stating that illegal activities undermine societal order.

In the wake of the demolition, it remains crucial for local leaders and community members to engage in dialogue about the implications of such actions. Finding common ground could foster better understanding and cooperation between different groups.

The Gujarat administration's commitment to addressing illegal structures reflects a larger trend observed across the country, as various states grapple with similar issues.
