NEET-UG Scores Dispute Sparks Protests in Gujarat.

Amidst the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2024 examination, students in Rajkot, Gujarat, took to the streets in protest against the decision for a re-examination. The issue began after allegations of irregularities and paper leaks surfaced following the declaration of results on June 4, earlier than the scheduled announcement date of June 14.

One of the protesting students, Palak, who scored an impressive 682 marks in the NEET-UG exams, voiced her frustration: "There should be no re-NEET exams. We have achieved these scores through hard work and dedication. Asking us to reappear after a gap of 1.5 months is unfair and jeopardises our future. It's like playing with our future aspirations."

The controversy intensified as it was revealed that 67 students had topped the exam with a perfect score of 720, prompting concerns over the fairness of the evaluation process. Subsequently, the Supreme Court of India intervened, allowing a re-test for more than 1,500 students who had been awarded "grace marks" due to the irregularities.

In response to widespread protests across several states, including Gujarat, against the postponement of the NEET exams, the central government took decisive steps. This included the removal of Subodh Kumar Singh, Director-General of the National Testing Agency (NTA), who was placed on compulsory wait by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Pradeep Singh Kharola has since been appointed as the new DG of the NTA.

Additionally, the Ministry of Education formed a high-level committee chaired by Dr. K Radhakrishnan, former chairman of ISRO and IIT Kanpur, to ensure transparency and fairness in future examinations.

The committee comprises experts such as Dr. Randeep Guleria, former Director of AIIMS, and academicians like Aditya Mittal and Prof. Ramamurthy K from the IIT system, who have been tasked with implementing reforms to uphold the integrity of examinations.

Moreover, responding to inputs from the Ministry of Home Affairs' I4C unit regarding the UGC-NET 2024 examination, the Ministry of Education referred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a thorough investigation.

The CBI has also been tasked with investigating the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 examination, underscoring the government's commitment to taking stringent action against any misconduct found.

The developments have sparked a nationwide debate on the future of standardised examinations and the need for transparency in their conduct. Students and parents alike have expressed concerns over the impact of such controversies on their academic pursuits and future prospects.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders await further updates on the outcomes of the investigations and the decisions taken by the authorities to ensure that the aspirations of millions of aspiring medical professionals are protected and upheld. The NEET-UG 2024 saga serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of maintaining integrity and fairness in the country's education system.
