Harivansh Narayan Singh has been elected unopposed as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for a third term, following a lack of nominations from the opposition benches.
Singh, who was nominated to the upper house by President Droupadi Murmu just last week, essentially secured a walkover when no other candidates were put forward.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the Rajya Sabha on Friday and congratulated him. The PM noted that the unanimous decision reflected deep-seated trust in Singh's leadership.
During his address to the House, the Prime Minister noted that being elected for a third consecutive term was a testament to the benefits the Rajya Sabha had reaped from Singh's extensive experience and his ability to carry all members along. "We have all seen the House become even more effective under Harivansh’s leadership," the Prime Minister said. He praised the Deputy Chairman for conducting proceedings with precision and dedication, expressing confidence that Singh would continue to uphold the dignity of the House.
Professionally a journalist, Singh is a member of Parliament representing the state of Bihar. It is rather unique how Singh became a politician since even after joining the government as an officer of a bank at a young age, he followed his heart’s desire for journalism. He graduated with a Post-Graduation in Economics and a journalism diploma.
He enjoyed a successful career in the media sector that spanned several years. His journey started when he began as a sub-editor at Dharamyug, later joining Ravivar. However, he gained prominence when he was appointed as the Chief Editor of Prabhat Khabar, earning him acclaim for his editorial services before taking up his present position.
