The Haryana Assembly elections, scheduled for October 1, 2024, are shaping up to be a competitive five-way contest. The political landscape in Haryana is currently dominated by the BJP, Congress, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The BJP, which has been in power since the 2019 elections, previously formed a coalition government with the JJP. Under this alliance, BJP’s Manohar Lal Khattar served as Chief Minister after the party won 40 seats in the 90-member assembly and the JJP secured 10 seats. The Congress, which had won 31 seats in the same elections, was the main opposition party.

However, the alliance between the BJP and JJP ended this year, leading to Khattar's resignation. Naib Saini from the BJP has since taken over as Chief Minister. This split has added an extra layer of complexity to the upcoming elections as the BJP strives to regain its footing after recent setbacks.

The Congress, buoyed by its recent victory in the Lok Sabha elections where it won five out of ten seats previously held by the BJP, is gearing up for a strong campaign. Despite this, the party faces internal disputes that could impact its performance.

Meanwhile, the AAP is capitalising on the momentum from its party workers and recent political developments. The release of prominent AAP leader Manish Sisodia has injected new energy into the party, which is now eyeing a significant presence in Haryana.

The political scene in Haryana is further complicated by the ongoing developments in Jammu and Kashmir. The Supreme Court has mandated that assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir be held by September 30, 2024.

Jammu and Kashmir will vote in three phases starting from September 18, and the results for both Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir will be announced on October 4, 2024.

With the Haryana Assembly's term ending in November, all eyes are on the October 1 elections. The outcome will determine the future political landscape of the state and set the stage for upcoming political battles.
