Heartfelt farewell: India bids adieu to UK Envoy, Alex Ellis

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed his gratitude and bid farewell to the outgoing UK High Commissioner, Alex Ellis, on Tuesday, acknowledging his efforts in strengthening the bilateral relationship between India and the United Kingdom.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed his gratitude and bid farewell to the outgoing UK High Commissioner, Alex Ellis, on Tuesday, acknowledging his efforts in strengthening the bilateral relationship between India and the United Kingdom.

 

During their meeting, EAM Jaishankar commended Alex Ellis for his dedicated service and significant contributions during his tenure in India. In a post on social media platform X, EAM Jaishankar stated, "Glad to receive UK High Commissioner @AlexWEllis on his farewell call.

 

Thank him for strengthening our bilateral relationship." Alex Ellis assumed the role of British High Commissioner to India in 2021, succeeding his predecessor. He presented his credentials to the then President Ram Nath Kovind on February 11, 2021, in a virtual ceremony, officially beginning his diplomatic assignment in India.

 

With a distinguished career in public service, Alex Ellis has held various significant positions within the UK government. Prior to his appointment as High Commissioner to India, he served as the Deputy National Security Adviser for the Integrated Review on foreign and security policy.

 

Additionally, he held the position of Director General in the Department for Exiting the EU for three years, where he played a crucial role in Brexit-related matters. Throughout his career, Alex Ellis has demonstrated expertise in security issues, EU affairs, and strategy formulation.

 

He served as the British Ambassador to Brazil from 2013 to 2017, and to Portugal from 2007 to 2010. Moreover, his experience extends to key roles within the European Union, including serving in the cabinet of the President of the European Commission.

 

Before joining the diplomatic service, Alex Ellis contributed to the transition to multi-party democracy in South Africa and taught in various capacities, including in India. He has a passion for music, theatre, and sports, particularly cricket.

 

As Alex Ellis concludes his diplomatic assignment in India, his efforts in enhancing bilateral ties between India and the UK are acknowledged and appreciated by both countries.
