Heavy rain warning for Mumbai, Pune as IMD issues alert

According to the IMD alert, Pune, Raigad, Satara, and nearby regions are likely to witness heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.

Commuters navigate waterlogged streets in Pune after overnight showers, as IMD issues a heavy rain alert for Pune, Thane, Raigad and Mumbai.


Following overnight showers in the city, the India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for Pune and nearby areas, including Thane, Raigad, and Mumbai, on Monday.


According to the warning issued by the IMD, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to affect Pune, Raigad, Satara, and Aurangabad, prompting an orange alert. Meanwhile, a yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued for Mumbai, its suburbs, and Thane.

 

 


Heavy rain lashes Pune, Mumbai, and beyond


As per the nowcast issued by the IMD, an orange alert is in place for Pune, Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ahmednagar, Beed, and Latur.


The IMD Mumbai forecasts moderate to intense spells of rainfall in these areas, accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms. Meanwhile, a yellow alert is active for light rains in Nashik, Palghar, Jalna, and Nagpur.

 

 


Heavy rain to affect parts of Maharashtra


On Sunday, the weather department issued a heavy rain warning for parts of Maharashtra for this week.


"Light to moderate rain/thunderstorms at many/some places with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra & Marathawada on 16th September with very heavy falls over Konkan & Goa, Maharashtra & Marathawada 14th & 15th September," read the forecast issued by the IMD.


Late-night rain in Pune also caused waterlogging across the city, with many residents taking to X (formerly Twitter) to demand the closure of schools and colleges. According to reports, IMD’s Shivajinagar observatory recorded 13.8mm of rain, with Talegaon (15mm), Hadapsar (13.5mm), and Magarpatta (10mm) also affected.
