India is preparing for another active monsoon day on Wednesday, with heavy to very heavy rain forecast across multiple states, particularly in the North East, which is emerging as the primary hotspot for intense precipitation.

 

According to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Assam and Meghalaya are set to bear the brunt of the wet weather on August 5, with severe downpours expected across isolated areas and the risk of extremely heavy spells in certain pockets. Neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh is also on high alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall.

 

Northern and central regions are equally bracing for significant disruption. Rainfall is expected to be very heavy and isolated in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand whereas steady rains are forecast in the regions of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

 

Widespread rains are expected in the eastern regions including Bihar, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal. Isolated regions of very heavy rainfall are expected in the states of Odisha, Sub Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim. Heavy rainfall is forecast in Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra. Rainfall would be very heavy in Kerala and coastal as well as interior Karnataka. In addition, thunderstorms with lightning and winds would occur in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.

 

This weather system would be driven by various systems acting together. The main monsoon trough currently stretches from Anupgarh through Delhi, Shahjahanpur, and Basti before extending eastwards into Nagaland. This is reinforced by multiple cyclonic circulations hovering over northern Haryana, north-east Rajasthan, southern Uttar Pradesh, north-west Bihar, and north-east Assam. Additional circulations over the west-central Bay of Bengal and South Interior Karnataka are further funnelling moisture across the southern peninsula, ensuring that the active wet spell will persist over the coming days, even as regional intensity varies.
