Mumbai sees intense showers as Maharashtra reels from floods.

At least ten people died in rain-related incidents across Maharashtra in the past 24 hours, while more than 11,800 individuals were evacuated from flood-affected areas, as Mumbai witnessed intense showers since Saturday night, officials said on Sunday.

According to the state disaster management department, four deaths were reported in Nashik district — three of them in a house collapse — while Dharashiv and Ahilyanagar each recorded two fatalities. One death was reported in Jalna and another in Yavatmal.

Marathwada emerged among the hardest-hit regions, with rising inflows into the Jayakwadi dam on the Godavari river prompting authorities to open all its gates.

Nearly 7,000 people were evacuated from Paithan in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar amid flood concerns, as the Harsul circle in the district recorded 196 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Several other Marathwada districts, including Beed, Nanded, and Parbhani, also received heavy downpours. Authorities confirmed that 16 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are deployed across Maharashtra, with two additional units kept on standby at the Pune headquarters.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the rainfall situation in eight districts of Marathwada and Solapur, instructing officials to intensify relief operations.

Mumbai battered by downpours

Mumbai has been experiencing heavy showers since Saturday night, with intermittent spells throughout Sunday. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), some areas recorded over 50 mm of rainfall between 8 am and 1 pm.

The rain intensity eased later in the afternoon, and road and rail services remained largely unaffected. Traffic at major underpasses and junctions, including Hindmata, Gandhi Market, Chunabhatti, Malad, Dahisar, and Mankhurd, moved smoothly.

During the five-hour period on Sunday, the city registered an average of 47.47 mm rainfall, with the western suburbs recording 53.61 mm and the eastern suburbs 37.92 mm.

Neighbouring Thane and Palghar districts also faced heavy rainfall. In Bhiwandi taluka of Thane, 262 people from 71 families were rescued, according to officials.

Rescue operations continue

In Beed, Nanded, and Parbhani, showers persisted. In Beed, the NDRF rescued 12 people stranded at the Sangvi temple in Aashti, while around 970 residents were shifted to safer locations within the Nanded Municipal Corporation limits.

The Godavari river in Nanded district was reported to be flowing at nearly 354 metres.

“The intensity of rainfall in Dharashiv eased from last night, so our focus has now shifted to providing assistance to affected families. However, with the continued release of 75,500 cusecs from the Sina Kolegaon dam, low-lying areas in Paranda were flooded. We have, however, evacuated 3,615 people to safety,” a senior district official told.

Excessive rainfall was reported in 189 revenue circles across six districts of Marathwada, a region usually prone to drought, which includes Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Dharashiv, Jalna, Beed, Latur, Nanded, Hingoli, and Parbhani.

At 10.30 pm on Sunday, the discharge from Jayakwadi dam in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar rose to 2.92 lakh cusecs, while inflows exceeded 3 lakh cusecs, officials said.

In Nashik, the Godavari river crossed the warning level, submerging several temples in the Ramkund area. Authorities confirmed that 21 people were rescued from inundated neighbourhoods.

The meteorological department issued a “red alert” warning of heavy to very heavy showers with strong winds on Sunday and Monday, with more heavy rainfall forecast for Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Solapur in western Maharashtra reported crop damage due to persistent downpours.

IMD forecasts rain till October 4

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy showers across Maharashtra until October 4.

On September 29, moderate to heavy rainfall was predicted for North Konkan districts, with light to moderate showers expected in Marathwada, South Konkan–Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra.

On September 30, light to moderate rainfall is expected in Marathwada, while most districts in Konkan–Goa, South Madhya Maharashtra, and parts of North Madhya Maharashtra may also receive rain.

From October 1 to 4, Marathwada, Konkan–Goa, and parts of Madhya Maharashtra are likely to see continued light to moderate rainfall, with moderate showers persisting across several districts on October 3 and 4, the IMD said.
