A fresh wave of heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh has created a mix of wonder and challenges. In Manali, snow-covered mountains turned into a logistical headache as over 1,000 vehicles were stranded between Solang and the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang on Monday.
Tourists, many arriving to enjoy the festive season of Christmas and New Year, found themselves stuck for hours in the winter wonderland. Local police launched a rescue operation, successfully moving around 700 tourists to safer areas.
Images from the scene showed authorities helping drivers and travelers navigate through the snow as the rescue efforts continued.
Christmas joy turns into traffic woes
The snowfall coincides with the holiday rush, as visitors flock to Manali to celebrate amidst the snow-covered mountains. While many were thrilled by the magical winter scenes, the heavy influx of tourists worsened traffic conditions, turning the festive excitement into a logistical challenge for local authorities.
Shimla's snowy charm
While Manali faced the struggles of heavy snowfall, Shimla basked in its snow-clad glory. The capital city was blanketed in a fresh layer of snow, bringing joy to both visitors and local businesses.
After a brief dry spell since the first snowfall on December 8, the recent snow rejuvenated the region, offering a "White Christmas" to tourists.
Excited travelers extended their stays, enchanted by the mesmerizing snowfall and the festive atmosphere. Many described the experience as unforgettable, with tourists from across the country calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime" moment.
Boost for tourism and hospitality
Local businesses in Shimla are optimistic about the extended tourist season, especially after the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The snowfall has not only delighted visitors but also infused life into the tourism industry, making this festive season a reason to celebrate for all.
"This is the first snowfall I’ve ever seen, and it’s a lifetime experience for me," shared a tourist from Haryana.
As Shimla enjoys a season of cheer, and Manali works to clear its roads, the snow-covered mountains of Himachal Pradesh remain a winter paradise for those seeking the magic of the holidays.
