The recent demolition drive conducted by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in Khajoori Khas has stirred controversy, particularly with the razing of the house belonging to Wakeel Hassan, a rat-hole miner who played a pivotal role in the Uttarakhand tunnel rescue operation.

Despite assurances from the government, Hassan's house was demolished without prior notice. In a video message, Hassan expressed his dismay, highlighting that his home was the only reward he sought for his involvement in the successful rescue of 41 workers trapped in Uttarkashi's Silkyara tunnel.

He accused the authorities of betraying their promises and emphasized the lack of communication regarding the demolition. The aftermath of the demolition was starkly evident as Hassan showcased the destruction caused to his property.

Additionally, he revealed the distressing ordeal of having to visit a police station in connection with the incident. Hassan was accompanied by Munna Qureshi, another member of the rescue team, who alleged police brutality during the demolition, including the mistreatment of Hassan's minor children.

Responding to inquiries, the DDA defended the demolition drive, stating that it was carried out to remove encroachments on land designated for planned development. Meanwhile, Delhi Police confirmed their involvement in maintaining law and order during the operation.

Hassan and several other members of the rat-hole mining team reside in Khajoori Khas, underscoring the impact of the demolition on their lives. Despite their heroic efforts in the Uttarakhand tunnel rescue operation, they now face the challenge of rebuilding their lives following the demolition of their homes.

This incident sheds light on the complexities surrounding urban development and the need for greater transparency and empathy in dealing with affected communities. As Hassan and his fellow rescuers grapple with the aftermath, their plight serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of such actions.
