The German Air Force is embarking on a historic journey with the Indian Air Force as they conduct joint training exercises for the first time. This significant milestone will unfold during the Tarang Shakti-2024 exercise, which is set to begin at Air Force Station Sulur in Tamil Nadu on August 6.
German Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, highlighted the momentous nature of this event, emphasising that it is the first time the German Air Force is engaging in exercises on Indian soil.
Ackermann expressed enthusiasm about the exercise, noting that it represents a substantial deepening of security and political relations between Germany and India. He described the exercise as a pivotal step in strengthening the security and defence partnership between the two nations.
The German Ambassador’s comments reflect the broader significance of the exercise in fostering international cooperation and enhancing strategic ties in a rapidly changing global landscape.
Adding to the historical significance of Tarang Shakti-2024, the German Air Force’s Lieutenant General and Inspector remarked on the extensive planning and collaboration that has gone into this joint exercise. He stressed that in today's interconnected world, building global partnerships is essential for addressing security challenges effectively.
The exercise will also see participation from the French Air and Space Force, marking another first for this multilateral air exercise. The French contingent will include three Rafale fighter jets, one Multirole Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft, and one A400M, supported by a team of 160 Air Force personnel.
The French Embassy in India confirmed this participation, detailing that it is part of a broader Indo-Pacific mission that began in France in late June and will conclude on August 15.
According to the French Embassy, the mission aims to demonstrate France’s commitment to protecting its interests in the Indo-Pacific region, uphold the rule of law and multilateralism, and enhance operational synergy with key partners such as India. By the end of this mission, the French forces will have visited 13 partner nations and participated in three major exercises, including Tarang Shakti.
The longstanding defence relationship between France and India is underscored by their extensive history of joint exercises. These include the VARUNA Navy exercises, which date back to 1983, as well as the GARUDA Air exercises and SHAKTI Army exercises. This ongoing collaboration highlights the strong strategic partnership and mutual trust between the two countries.
As Tarang Shakti-2024 kicks off, it represents a significant moment in international military cooperation, showcasing the commitment of Germany, France, and India to strengthening their defence capabilities and fostering global partnerships. The exercise promises to enhance interoperability among the participating nations and contribute to regional stability and security.
