Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to embark on a two-day visit to Chhattisgarh starting August 24. The purpose of this visit is to review the progress of anti-Naxal operations in the state and assess the overall situation concerning Naxal insurgency.
Shah will arrive in Raipur on the evening of August 23. The visit will include a series of meetings aimed at evaluating current strategies and enhancing efforts against Naxal activities. These sessions will involve discussions with police chiefs and chief secretaries from neighbouring states that are affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE).
The meetings will focus on several key areas: the measures taken against Naxal insurgency, infrastructure development in Red corridors, and interstate coordination.
The discussion will be held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh’s capital, and will be attended by senior officials including the chief secretaries and directors general of police from Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, and West Bengal. Also present will be Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and Director of the Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, as well as CRPF Chief Anish Dayal Singh.
On August 25, Shah is scheduled to inaugurate the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) office in Raipur. This will follow a review meeting on the morning of the same day. Additionally, Shah will chair a meeting focused on expanding cooperation in Chhattisgarh.
This review meeting comes at a crucial time when there have been significant improvements in the geographical spread of LWE violence. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the number of LWE-affected districts has decreased from 126 across 10 states in 2013 to 38 districts in 2024. Chhattisgarh remains one of the most affected states, with 15 districts experiencing Naxal activities.
MHA data shows a substantial reduction in LWE violence incidents by 73% since 2010, with resultant deaths decreasing by 86% from the peak level in 2010. The data indicates a sharp decline in both incidents and deaths related to LWE in 2024 compared to the previous year.
The central government has invested significantly in addressing LWE challenges. Over the past decade, Rs 6,908 crore has been allocated for capacity building in LWE-affected states through various schemes. Additionally, Rs 1,000 crore has been dedicated to central agencies for improving infrastructure and security in these regions.
