Hockey India Congratulates Sreejesh on Padma Bhushan Award.

Hockey India has extended its heartfelt congratulations to former Indian men's hockey team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, following the announcement of his being conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan.

This honour is India's third-highest civilian award, and Sreejesh's receipt of it is a monumental achievement in the world of sports.

Sreejesh, often referred to as the ‘God of Modern Indian Hockey’, has made an indelible mark on the sport.

His name now joins the legendary Major Dhyan Chand, who received the Padma Bhushan in 1956, as only the second hockey player to be honoured with such a distinction. This recognition highlights his exceptional contribution to Indian hockey, both as a player and as a coach.

The 18-year-long career of PR Sreejesh is a testament to his dedication and skill. Having represented India in 336 international matches, his career culminated in a historic bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, following on from the bronze in Tokyo 2020.

His remarkable career has seen him rise to become one of the most decorated goalkeepers in the history of hockey, with accolades such as the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021, 2022, and 2024, the Arjuna Award in 2015, and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021, among others.

Sreejesh's journey with the Indian national team began in 2010, and he quickly became the cornerstone of India's defensive strategy. His leadership and expertise were critical in guiding India through high-stakes tournaments, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential figures in the sport.

His performances under pressure were particularly notable, and he played a pivotal role in India's resurgence on the global stage.

Following his retirement from international hockey after the Paris 2024 Olympics, Sreejesh transitioned to coaching and continued to inspire the next generation.

His coaching success was evident in November 2024 when he guided the junior men’s team to victory in the Junior Asia Cup, further solidifying his contribution to the sport.

The President of Hockey India, Dilip Tirkey, expressed immense pride in Sreejesh’s recognition. He remarked, "It is a moment of immense pride for the entire hockey community that PR Sreejesh has been recognised with the Padma Bhushan.

His contribution to Indian hockey has been truly monumental, both as a player and now as a mentor to the next generation." Tirkey acknowledged that Sreejesh’s achievements have not only inspired countless young players but have also set a high standard in Indian hockey.

Hockey India’s secretary-general, Bhola Nath Singh, also lauded Sreejesh’s journey, highlighting his unwavering commitment to the sport.

Singh stated, “PR Sreejesh’s journey is one of dedication, perseverance, and excellence. His accolades on the field speak volumes about his commitment to the sport. Being only the second hockey player after Major Dhyan Chand to receive the Padma Bhushan is a testament to his extraordinary career and his lasting impact on Indian hockey.”

Upon receiving the Padma Bhushan, Sreejesh expressed his heartfelt gratitude, saying, “I am deeply honoured to receive the Padma Bhushan, and I would like to thank the Government of India for this recognition. Hockey has been my life for almost two decades, and every time I stepped onto the field, it was to give my best for the country. This award is a tribute to all the players, coaches, and support staff who have been a part of my journey.”

He also expressed humility in following the footsteps of Major Dhyan Chand, a figure who continues to inspire players worldwide.

In addition to his Olympic achievements, Sreejesh has played in four Olympic Games—London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024.

His career also includes two Asian Games gold medals (2014 and 2022), an Asian Games bronze medal (2018), and two Commonwealth Games silver medals (2014 and 2022).

He has also been an integral part of India’s victories in the Asian Champions Trophy, helping the team claim the title four times (2011, 2016, 2018, and 2023).
