Home Ministry cancels FCRA licences of Five NGOs over alleged violations

The decision to revoke the FCRA licences was purportedly made due to allegations that these NGOs had diverted foreign contributions for purposes other than those stated in their declarations.

- New Delhi - UPDATED: April 4, 2024, 09:57 AM - 2 min read

Union home ministry has taken action against at least five more non-governmental organizations (NGOs) by cancelling their foreign funding licences.

This move comes as a result of alleged violations of provisions outlined in the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010, and Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Rules, 2011.

The affected NGOs include prominent organizations such as the CNI Synodical Board of Social Service, Voluntary Health Association of India, Indo-Global Social Service Society, Church's Auxiliary for Social Action, and Evangelical Fellowship of India, according to the sources.

With the cancellation of their FCRA registrations, these NGOs are now barred from receiving funding from foreign sources and are unable to utilize any existing foreign contributions.

The decision to revoke the FCRA licences was purportedly made due to allegations that these NGOs had diverted foreign contributions for purposes other than those stated in their declarations.

As of April 3, 2024, there are reportedly 16,242 active NGOs holding valid FCRA licences. However, the licences of 14,396 other NGOs have expired, while 20,701 NGOs have had their licences cancelled.

The government's vigilance over foreign contributions to NGOs has heightened in recent years, with concerns regarding transparency and accountability.

Data presented in Parliament last year revealed that between 2019-2020 and 2021-2022, a staggering sum of Rs 55,741.51 crore was received in foreign contributions by 13,520 FCRA-registered associations or NGOs.
