The Indian Air Force (IAF) has launched a new comic book aimed at inspiring the younger generation by showcasing the heroic tales of the IAF, including the legendary Marshal Arjan Singh and the famed Battle of Boyra from the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
The 32-page comic, titled Heroes of the Indian Air Force - Vol. I, was unveiled on Wednesday by Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari at a ceremony held at Vayu Bhawan.
The comic book, conceived under the vision of Air Chief Marshal Chaudhari and led by the IAF’s DISHA (Directorate of Induction and Selection in a Holistic Approach) Cell, represents a novel approach to engaging young minds.
The medium of comic books was selected to effectively reach students and motivate them to consider a career in the Indian Air Force.
The inaugural volume includes two key stories. The first, Find Your Calling, chronicles the life of Arjan Singh, who not only participated in the Burma campaign during World War II and the 1965 Indo-Pak war but also became the first IAF officer to be awarded the rank of Marshal of the Indian Air Force.
Singh’s achievements are presented in a way that highlights his bravery and dedication, aiming to inspire readers to follow in his footsteps.
The second story, Battle of Boyra, vividly recounts the intense and dramatic battle fought during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Known for its “adrenaline-pumping action sequences,” this narrative is portrayed from the perspective of the pilots, showcasing the prowess and valour of No.22 Squadron, the Swifts, famously dubbed the Sabre Slayers.
The visually compelling tales are designed to instil values of courage, motivation, and perseverance in young readers. The comic book is expected to serve as a tool for fostering a deeper appreciation of the IAF’s history and heroics among school children.
A digital version of the comic book will soon be available online, with plans for it to be freely accessible and shareable on social media. The project involved meticulous collaboration between the Air Force History Cell, the Air Force Museum, and the Directorate of Ceremonials to ensure historical accuracy and proper depiction of uniforms from the respective periods.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to educate youth about the Indian Air Force’s storied past and to inspire them to consider joining the force.
According to an IAF official, the comic book is intended to be a direct call to action for the younger generation, offering them a glimpse into the illustrious history and exciting opportunities within the Air Force.
