The attempted burglary and subsequent attack on actor Saif Ali Khan at his Mumbai residence has ignited a fierce political outcry, with Opposition leaders questioning the law and order situation in the city.
The 54-year-old actor sustained multiple stab injuries during the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at Lilavati Hospital.
In a late-night attack, a burglar broke into Khan's home, inflicting at least six stab wounds, with two deep injuries near his spine. The assailant managed to escape, and no arrests have been made so far.
Political leaders raise alarm
Priyanka Chaturvedi, Rajya Sabha MP from Shiv Sena (UBT), emphasised the severity of the situation, stating: "If celebrities are not safe, who in Mumbai is?"
She highlighted previous incidents, including the murder of veteran politician Baba Siddique and the attack outside Salman Khan’s residence.
"Baba Siddique ji’s family is still awaiting justice after his shocking murder. Salman Khan is forced to live in a bulletproof house. Now, it is Saif Ali Khan all in Bandra. An area with the highest concentration of celebrities, which should have adequate security," Chaturvedi said.
Clyde Crasto, spokesperson for the Sharad Pawar-led NCP camp, echoed similar concerns. "If high-profile individuals like Saif Ali Khan can be attacked in theies, it raises serious questions about the safety of ordinary citizens," he said.
Congress MP Varsha Gaekwad expressed deep concern, stating: "What is going on in Mumbai? That this happens in Bandra, a supposedly safe neighbourhood, is the most worrying. What security can the common man expect?"
Government's response
BJP MLA Ram Kadam assured the public that the police would thoroughly investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.
"The police are investigating the matter, and no one will be spared. They are responsible to ensure such incidents do not happen again," Kadam said in a video message.
The hospital confirmed that Saif Ali Khan sustained six stab injuries, with two deep wounds near his spine. A team of doctors is currently performing surgery to address the serious injuries.
Actor's team issues statement
The actor’s team urged patience from the media and fans. "There was an attempted burglary at Mr Saif Ali Khan's residence. He is currently in hospital undergoing surgery. We request the media and fans to be patient. It is a police matter, and we will keep you updated on the situation," the team stated.
Khan's neurosurgery has been successfully completed, with a sharp object removed from the affected area. The object, estimated to be around 2-3 inches in length, appears to be a fragment of a knife. Cosmetic surgery is now underway.
