IIT Madras has entered the top 200 in the QS World University Rankings for the first time, securing the 180th position in the 2025 rankings released by Quacquarelli Symonds.
The institute jumped 47 places from its previous rank of 227, marking its highest-ever global standing since the inception of the rankings. The leap highlights the institute’s sustained academic excellence, expanding global influence and growing reputation in science, engineering and technology.
“This achievement reflects the continuous efforts of our faculty, students and staff and the impact of our global collaborations,” an official from IIT Madras said, adding, “Breaking into the top 200 is a proud moment not just for our institute, but for Indian academia as a whole.”
The QS World University Rankings are among the most reputed global rankings for higher education institutions, evaluating universities across indicators like academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, research impact (citations per faculty) and international outlook.
India’s rising academic stature is further reflected in the rankings, which feature 54 Indian institutions among 1,501 globally ranked universities from 106 countries. Of these, 22 Indian universities improved their positions, the positions of 13 remained unchanged and 11 declined, while eight universities entered the rankings for the first time.
Among Indian institutions, IIT Delhi leads the national pack at 123, followed by IIT Bombay (129), IIT Madras (180), IIT Kharagpur (215), and IISc Bangalore (219). Other Indian universities featured in the top 20 nationally are Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), University of Delhi, Anna University, Savitribai Phule Pune University and Chandigarh University.
Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues to dominate the QS rankings, retaining its 1st position, followed by Imperial College London, Stanford University, the University of Oxford and Harvard University. European and Asian institutions also made it to the top 10, with ETH Zurich (7) and the National University of Singapore (NUS) (8) excelling.
As India continues to invest in research, innovation and academic infrastructure, such achievements underscore the country’s potential to become a leading global education hub in coming years.
