The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has once again achieved a remarkable feat by securing the top spot in the latest National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings.

This accomplishment marks the sixth consecutive year that IIT Madras has claimed the No.1 position in the 'Overall' category and the ninth year in a row in the 'Engineering' category.

The director of IIT Madras, Kamakoti, attributed this success to the collective efforts of students, staff, alumni, as well as support from both state and central governments.

Kamakoti expressed his happiness over the achievement, highlighting the cohesive work of all involved parties as the driving force behind this success. He emphasised the importance of NIRF as a ranking mechanism for the country, noting that it reflects the institute's commitment to excellence in education and innovation.

He also shared insights into the various initiatives undertaken by IIT Madras, such as the inclusion of 30,000 students in the data science stream, with over 5,000 students from below the poverty line receiving scholarships. The institute's efforts in launching new courses and departments over the past two years have contributed significantly to its outreach and perception.

The director further mentioned that maintaining the top position is a challenging task, especially given the competition in the field. However, he reiterated IIT Madras's dedication to participating in the nation's academic needs across various streams.

He expressed a strong desire to ensure that every child born in India has the opportunity to pursue an undergraduate education at IIT Madras. This ambitious goal underscores the institute's commitment to providing quality education to all.

The announcement of the NIRF rankings was made by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi, with Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region, Sukanta Majumdar, and other stakeholders in attendance.

The rankings, now in their ninth edition, evaluate institutions based on five broad parameters: teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach; inclusivity; and perception. This year, three new categories were introduced, bringing the total to 16.

In addition to IIT Madras's success, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay secured the second and third positions, respectively, in the engineering category. The management category also saw top performances from institutions like IIM-Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta, which ranked among the top five.

The comprehensive framework for NIRF rankings continues to serve as a valuable tool for assessing and recognizing the excellence of higher educational institutions across India.
