International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez visited India to discuss sustainable maritime practices and strengthen cooperation in the global shipping sector.
TK Ramachandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), welcomed Dominguez during his visit to the Ministry, where they engaged in discussions on key maritime developments, sectoral challenges and future strategies for green shipping and sustainable port development.
The Ministry highlighted the discussions in a post on X, stating that the two officials exchanged views on the latest trends in the maritime industry and the importance of environmental sustainability at every level.
Dominguez’s visit marks his first official trip to India since assuming office in 2024 and underscores the IMO’s commitment to collaborating with key maritime nations to address evolving challenges in global shipping.
As part of his three-day visit, Dominguez toured the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the Indian Sailors Home Society (ISHS) in Mumbai on 19 February.
At JNPA, he engaged with the port's leadership and explored key facilities to gain firsthand insights into port operations, infrastructure and sustainability initiatives.
The discussions focused on fostering eco-friendly port operations, implementing cutting-edge technologies to decarbonise shipping and adopting environmentally responsible maritime practices.
The IMO’s focus on green shipping aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability in its maritime sector. The government has been investing in initiatives such as shore power infrastructure, alternative fuels and digitalisation to reduce carbon emissions and improve port efficiency.
During his visit, Dominguez met with senior officials, including Shyam Jagannathan, Director General of Shipping, and Unmesh Sharad Wagh, Chairman of JNPA, to discuss collaborative efforts in these areas.
